Scotland's Information Landscape

Scotland’s libraries contain a wealth of information stored at different locations across the country. Scotland’s Information Landscape aims to bring all of these collections together online, letting you make the most of our libraries and their collections.

Ask Scotland plays an important part in this by putting you in touch with our library staff. We also have a number of search tools that allow you to delve directly into our rich and varied collections.

Scotland’s Information

Scotland’s Information brings together the country’s libraries, archives and museums, providing details of the collections they hold and services they offer. Our interactive map lets you find your nearest service point, or search the whole of Scotland for collections on a particular topic or historical figure.

Find a book anywhere in Scotland (CAIRNS)

Our combined search tool called CAIRNS accesses the catalogues of all Scottish libraries in one go. This means that you can find out about resources held anywhere in Scotland with just one search. Remember, most libraries will have agreed to share resources with each other through an inter-library loan agreement. This means you could get access to items held anywhere in Scotland.

Scottish Distributed Digital Library (SDDL)

The SDDL is a directory of digital libraries about Scotland that brings together collections of free online resources of Scottish interest. This includes digital collections that have been made available by libraries, archives and museums, as well as content from other sources. Using SSDL you can find a collection of rich media libraries, which include text based resources, images, audio files and videos all about Scotland.
